Sapphire fiber is a chemically resistant and scratch-resistant material with a melting point of 2072°C. MMI offers LHPG-grade sapphire fibers with diameters ranging from 75 to 500 μm. Additionally, fibers with tapered ends are also available. This is an important feature because the flexibility of the fiber varies inversely with the fourth power of its diameter (for example, a 100 μm fiber is 16 times more flexible than a 200 μm fiber). Tapered fibers provide users with high throughput capabilities without sacrificing flexibility in energy delivery and spectral applications. PTFE sheaths and/or connectors are available for fibers with diameters greater than 100 μm.
